Peace and Love Orphanage- Accra, Ghana
We provide programs for the 35 children at Peace and Love
Orphanage in Accra Ghana. These are children who have been
orphaned, primarily by the AIDS epidemic. Prior to the
intervention of AEI, these children lacked instruction that would
provide them with career opportunities, and lacked connections to
the traditional arts of their culture. In this context,
participating artists primarily focus on skill-building,
apprenticeship and performance.
Our programs include instruction in traditional drumming and
dance, kpanlogo drumming, giel (gourd xylophone), atenteben
(bamboo flute), gome (foot bass drum), topoi bell, shakera, and
batik (fabric dying).
So far, our programs at the
Peace and Love Orphanage in Accra, Ghana
have been a huge success! The members of Gouda Music
performed for the children at the orphanage and taught workshops
in many instruments. Atenteben and Kpalango; lessons now continue throughout the year.
In August 2008, AEI established the Peace and
Love Orphanage Drumming and Dance troop. After a high rate of
student apprenticeship with Amramre-Mma Drums and Dance, the troop
was formed and currently has 14 children participating. These
children perform professionally in their communities, and bring in
money for medicine and electricity at the orphanage. AEI was also
able to provide a set of traditional instruments for the
orphanage.
